G Wu is a local Chinese restaurant showcasing more than 30 years of experience by two sisters, Mel and Jade. The two of them set up years ago and have never looked back. The restaurant is set on two floors, the downstairs being used as a bar and takeaway collection point. The upstairs seats up to 120 guests. G Wu cater for vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free allergies.
I visited last week, with ten family members, for a mid-week treat and to celebrate someone’s birthday. It did not disappoint- several people had recommended it to us, and it was easy to see why.
MEGA BONUS: We were sat at a circular table with the traditional spinning-glass top to share our food the traditional way.
The service was a little slow to start, mainly due to a number of our party being later than planned, but the staff were very understanding and more than accommodating for the three children, and one baby we had with us.
The bar is very well stocked for those all-important celebratory drinks before starting the meal. G Wu offer a range of cocktails (see Cosmopolitan below), free pour lagers, wines and soft drinks, as well as some bottled beers.For starters; we ordered lots of the ‘classic’ vegetable spring rolls, some beautifully presented prawn and pepper skewers and some spicy shredded chicken. The chicken was seasoned with Chinese salt and pepper flavourings and was effortlessly falling apart. The prawns were cooked with a lovely butter glaze and packed with flavour from some fresh marinade. Next time we visit I would love to try their mixed vegetarian (photo below- seaweed, vegetarian spring rolls, vegetarian toasts, vegetarian won tons & vegetarian chicken skewers) or meaty starter.
For mains; there was a large selection ordered, including; Bean-curd in Black Bean and Green Pepper sauce, Chicken in Black Bean sauce, Chicken Chow Mein, Crispy Shredded Beef, Crispy Shredded Chicken, Fillet Steak with Ginger and Spring Onions, Chicken Chop Suey style, King Prawns with Chinese Vegetables and a selection of sides from Noodles, to Salt and Pepper Chips and Egg-Fried Rice.
Despite there being a lot of us, the food was still piping hot once we had all been served. Everyone commented on how fresh the food tasted. The chicken and meat was succulent and well presented, we all enjoyed our meals. I myself had the Chicken in Black Bean sauce and it was beautiful, the chicken was falling apart, the peppers were crunchy adding a good texture and the sauce was flavourful but not overpowering. (Below: the crispy shredded beef).We were all too full and tired to finish with a dessert but the array of teas and coffees to complement the desserts means we are sure to come back and try G Wu again.
